Steve Gaines is famous for using a Fender Stratocaster, and many people presume he played it on I Know a Little. But, this is not the case. Steve played his 1958 Gibson Les Paul Custom. Here's evidence that he played a Les Paul instead of a Stratocaster. I'm nearly 60 now, Back in the day, guitarists used their volume to clean up their distorted sounds and when "the jam" part of a song started, they simply turned up their volume. This also lent to "dynamics" in a song, a part which a lot modern bands leave completely out because they use pedals. Pedal boards WERE NOT a big thing in what is now known as classic rock. They got all their tone from volume, the amp, and the guitar. You really don't need a lot of pedals. What you really need is a GOOD AMP, a DECENT guitar (Gary even play Squiers), and use your volume and TONE knobs to get your signature tones. Capos were also used on a lot of songs, "Freebird" and "Hotel California" are examples. One other tool used was a slide. Gary used both a capo and a slide on Freebird. Of course the music industry saw DOLLAR SIGNS from selling "Guitar Effects" and today the market is SWAMPED with guitar effects. Not that effects don't have their place, but you do not need 10 or 15 effect pedals, unless of course you are doing some really complex unique one of a kind song. KEEP IT STUPID SIMPLE is the original phrase experienced musicians used, not keep it simple stupid, which was used to stealth insult a underexperienced musician. It's the SIMPLICITY that makes the songs great, not numerous guitar pedals, effects boards, or some other mythical gadgetry. So, if your an aspiring guitarist, if you take this advice to heart, you'll go a long way because it's the proven technique that works over and over. You'll learn to "finesse" the tones out of the guitar because you DON'T have a gazillion effects, which makes you a better and better guitarist over time.

You don’t sound like Gaines with either Axe dude. Steve probably would have done this song on the strat but that strat like all Lynyrd Skynyrds equipment became an object of theft. That’s why the song Working for the MCA came out because it was written about their gear being stolen, and that was when Steve started using the Black Les Paul for everything.. you can find songs that pre date 1977 even I know a Little recordings in which Steve would using his Stratocaster. It’s neither guitar but more about the man wielding the Axe…

I think it's just a little too high... he would seem to mimic Claptons "woman tone" but with the bridge pickup...it might be you can't get away from that Gary Rossington sound? Of which Skynyrd were big fans of Free...and how about re-uploading that Allen Collins thing where you go into Blue on Black?...I forget. Great stuff anyway....whatever

Very Impressive!! I sure wish you could help me fix my chipping and teach me how to make a ball check up in a fairly long chip from the edge of a green. I’m a pro musician and have always had a gift for transcribing “licks” note for note perfectly. Most of the time, amature musicians don’t even name chords correctly and it’s essential. They are Probably doing something fundamentally wrong when analyzing. Sounds like me and my chipping. Anyway, you really impressed me this morning and now I want to watch you teach chipping. Thanks bro! You are so talented!! Gift from God, my friend!
